Uber Technologies Inc. is accelerating its push into autonomous mobility, planning self-driving robotaxi services across more than 10 global markets, including Hong Kong and Madrid. If approved, Hong Kong would become the company’s first autonomous ride-hailing city in Asia, marking a major milestone in its international expansion.
The rollout is part of Uber’s broader strategy to facilitate robotaxi trips in up to 15 cities worldwide by the end of 2026, with additional launches planned in Houston and Zurich. Uber is committing capital to vehicle partners to ensure early access to autonomous fleets, while collaborating with banks and private equity firms to finance the vehicles.
By leveraging its platform, Uber aims to achieve structural advantages over standalone robotaxi operators, including higher vehicle utilization and shorter pickup times, enhancing the overall efficiency of autonomous ride-hailing.
The robotaxi expansion comes amid profitability pressures, as Uber forecasted first-quarter adjusted earnings below analyst expectations and missed fourth-quarter estimates, leading to a roughly 5 percent decline in its shares. Nonetheless, demand for Uber’s services remains robust, with trips rising 22 percent in the fourth quarter, particularly for shared and lower-cost options. First-quarter gross bookings are expected to exceed Wall Street forecasts.
Uber emphasizes that robotaxis are designed to expand the overall mobility market rather than replace existing demand. By increasing supply, improving reliability, and lowering prices, autonomous vehicles are expected to drive higher trip volumes over time.
Uber’s autonomous strategy includes collaborations with developers such as Waabi, which recently secured US$1 billion in funding and intends to deploy self-driving vehicles exclusively on Uber’s platform. According to Uber, vehicles operating through its platform have already demonstrated higher utilization and faster pickup times compared with standalone robotaxi services.
The expansion into Hong Kong and other international markets illustrates Uber’s ambition to lead the next phase of autonomous mobility. By combining capital support, strategic partnerships, and platform efficiency, Uber is positioning itself to scale Robotaxi Market services rapidly while strengthening operational advantages over competitors. Analysts view this approach as a potential blueprint for autonomous ride-hailing adoption in global urban centers.
If regulatory approvals are granted, the Hong Kong rollout would represent a significant step for Uber’s autonomous ambitions in Asia. With continued platform-driven deployment, Uber is poised to reshape urban transportation by integrating autonomous technology, enhancing accessibility, and expanding shared mobility offerings worldwide.
