Walnut Production โ Walnut production refers to the total quantity of walnuts harvested and produced from walnut trees within a country or region during a specific year. It measures the agricultural output of walnuts, including commercially cultivated walnut orchards and other agricultural production systems. The indicator represents harvested walnut quantities and is generally measured in tonnes, reflecting the scale, productivity, and growth trends of the walnut industry across different regions.
Walnut cultivation is primarily concentrated in regions with suitable environmental conditions, where cooler temperatures, fertile soils, and appropriate agricultural landscapes support productive walnut orchards. Between 2015 and 2024, Indiaโs walnut production showed a positive growth trend, increasing from approximately 238 thousand tonnes in 2015 to around 317.78 thousand tonnes in 2024. The increase reflects improvements in orchard management, expansion of cultivation activities, better farming practices, and enhanced productivity among growers. Indiaโs walnut industry mainly consists of cultivated walnut orchards producing edible walnuts for domestic consumption, food processing, and agricultural markets. The sector provides important economic opportunities for farming communities by supporting employment in cultivation, harvesting, and distribution activities. Adoption of improved cultivation methods, better crop management techniques, and technological advancements has contributed to strengthening production efficiency. However, walnut production is influenced by several factors, including climatic conditions, changing weather patterns, availability of irrigation resources, orchard age, pest management challenges, and fluctuations in market demand. Sustainable agricultural practices and modernization of farming systems are important for ensuring future production stability and competitiveness. This macro indicator evaluates the annual harvested quantity of walnuts produced from cultivated walnut trees in India, highlighting changes in production volumes, cultivation patterns, and industry performance over time. It includes only primary walnut production from agricultural activities and excludes processed walnut products such as walnut oil, roasted walnuts, and packaged food items. The indicator also excludes imports, exports, consumption levels, market value, and non-food uses of walnut trees, focusing specifically on agricultural walnut nut production.
