Tobacco Production — Tobacco production refers to the total quantity of raw, unmanufactured tobacco leaves harvested from tobacco crops within a country or region during a specific year, generally measured in tonnes. It represents the agricultural output generated through the cultivation, growth, and harvesting of tobacco plants for commercial use. This macro indicator tracks changes in tobacco farming activities, production volumes, cultivation practices, harvested area, and yield performance over time, providing insights into the scale and trends of tobacco crop production across different regions.
Production recovered in 2017, reaching 32.06455 thousand tonnes, and remained relatively stable in 2018 with 31.44024 thousand tonnes. In 2019, tobacco production decreased slightly to 29.98605 thousand tonnes, followed by 29.23808 thousand tonnes in 2020. Production began recovering afterward, reaching 30.82649 thousand tonnes in 2021, increasing to 34.87165 thousand tonnes in 2022, and further rising to 38.6939 thousand tonnes in 2023. In 2024, Vietnam recorded its highest production level during the period, reaching 48.313 thousand tonnes. The overall growth reflects Vietnam’s strong agricultural capacity, suitable climate conditions, and continued development of tobacco cultivation areas. Tobacco farming provides income opportunities for farmers in several rural regions and supports industries involved in tobacco processing and manufacturing. Vietnam cultivates different tobacco varieties used for cigarette production and other tobacco-related products. However, the sector operates under increasing pressure from tobacco control measures, environmental concerns, and changing consumer behavior. To remain competitive, producers have focused on improving farming practices, increasing productivity, and enhancing leaf quality. The significant rise in production between 2020 and 2024 highlights the expansion of Vietnam’s tobacco cultivation sector despite global challenges facing the industry. The 2015–2024 production trend indicates Vietnam’s growing role in the regional tobacco supply chain and reflects the country’s ability to maintain and increase agricultural output through improved cultivation methods and market adaptation.
