Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemical company, has announced a strategic collaboration with Vertimass LLC aimed at accelerating the development and commercialization of advanced zeolite catalysts. The partnership seeks to scale Vertimass’ proprietary Consolidated Alcohols Deoxygenation and Oligomerization (CADO) technology, which converts biobased alcohols into liquid transportation fuels, offering a practical route toward sustainable energy solutions.
Under the agreement, Clariant will provide extensive technical support to transition the CADO process from laboratory demonstration to commercial production. The company’s contributions will include:
Advanced zeolite catalyst development and optimization
Guidance on industrial-scale process implementation
Supply of catalyst samples for testing and validation
Detailed characterization services to assess performance and properties
Ongoing consultation from its team of zeolite specialists
This collaboration builds upon an existing relationship between the two companies and focuses on enhancing catalyst efficiency while facilitating smooth scale-up to industrial volumes.
Gene Mueller, Vice President and Head of Ethylene for Clariant Catalysts, emphasized the significance of the partnership, noting that it represents a meaningful step forward in renewable fuel production. He highlighted the commercial and environmental potential of Vertimass’ alcohol-to-fuel conversion, emphasizing that combining process innovation with Clariant’s expertise in catalyst development could accelerate the route to market.
Charles E. Wyman, President and CEO of Vertimass, added that Clariant’s depth of knowledge in zeolite catalyst technology and commercial deployment makes the company an ideal partner for global roll-out of the CADO process.
Vertimass’ CADO technology enables the catalytic conversion of sustainable methanol, ethanol, and other alcohols into fuels compatible with current vehicles and aircraft. This approach offers an environmentally beneficial alternative to conventional fuel production, reducing carbon emissions without requiring major infrastructure changes.
Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Irvine, California, Vertimass specializes in developing and licensing breakthrough renewable fuel technologies. Clariant, meanwhile, continues to strengthen its position as a leader in zeolite-based catalysts and industrial-scale chemical solutions.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the global zeolite market is experiencing strong momentum, driven by rising demand for sustainable and efficient chemical processes. The consultancy notes that collaborations like Clariant and Vertimass exemplify how innovation in zeolite technology can unlock new opportunities in renewable fuels, petrochemicals, and industrial catalysis. The growing focus on energy transition, carbon reduction, and biofuel production is expected to expand the adoption of advanced zeolite platforms in commercial applications.
The partnership highlights Clariant’s commitment to advancing zeolite innovation and supporting sustainable chemistry. By bridging the gap between laboratory research and commercial biofuel production, Clariant and Vertimass aim to accelerate the global transition to cleaner energy sources and deliver practical solutions for a low-carbon future.
