GC Biopharma has achieved a significant milestone in the Biotechnology Market with its varicella vaccine, Barycela, receiving marketing authorization from the Guatemalan Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (Ministerio de Salud Pública y Asistencia Social). This marks the first time Barycela has been approved in a Latin American country, signaling the company’s growing presence in the region.
Barycela, a live vaccine developed using GC Biopharma’s proprietary "MAV/06" strain, is recognized as the world’s first varicella vaccine manufactured without antibiotics. This innovation eliminates risks associated with antibiotic residues, such as kanamycin, neomycin, and erythromycin, enhancing product safety while maintaining high immunogenicity. Long-term clinical follow-up indicates that neutralizing antibodies are generated in 99–100% of recipients, with antibody persistence comparable to leading global vaccines.
With existing distribution through the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), GC Biopharma plans to accelerate expansion into individual Latin American countries, leveraging this regulatory approval to broaden access and adoption. Following its inclusion in the WHO Position Paper, Barycela now holds international recognition equivalent to Oka-strain-based vaccines and can be used interchangeably with these global products.
“This marketing authorization holds deep significance as it marks our first product approval in Latin America,” said Lee Jae-woo, Head of the Development Division at GC Biopharma. “We will strengthen Barycela’s global standing based on its differentiated product capabilities and remain committed to expanding access to our innovative therapies worldwide.”
The approval of Barycela in Guatemala demonstrates a growing trend of biotechnology companies advancing region-specific vaccine access while leveraging antibiotic-free formulations to enhance safety and efficacy. Analysts expect this development to drive increased adoption of GC Biopharma’s innovative vaccines in Latin America, positioning the company competitively in the global varicella vaccine market.
