Gotion to Supply 6GWh BESS for Saudi Arabia's First Tender

Gotion High-Tech to Supply 6GWh BESS for Saudi Arabia's First Utility-Scale Storage Tender

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia September 30, 2026, Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech has been confirmed as the technology supplier for three utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects totalling 6GWh, awarded to an ACWA Power-led consortium under Saudi Arabia's inaugural utility-scale battery storage tender a landmark procurement that signals the kingdom's accelerating transition toward large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

The three projects Al Muwayah and Haden in Makkah province, and Al Kahafa in Hail province — are each configured at 500MW/2GWh, giving Gotion approximately 75% of the tender's total 2GW/8GWh capacity. Gotion values its share of the contracts at approximately US$1.16 billion.

The contracts were awarded by the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), the kingdom's central procurement body for electricity generation and storage. SPPC signed build-own-operate agreements for four 500MW/2GWh projects in August 2026, marking Saudi Arabia's first such contracts for battery storage. Winning bidders entered 15-year service contracts and retain full equity in their respective project companies.

The award also marks the first international large-scale deployment of Gotion Grid, the company's utility-scale storage system. Gotion stated that its systems are engineered for Saudi Arabia's desert conditions, operating between -30°C and 55°C, with a thermal management system designed to reduce high-temperature degradation by 40% compared with conventional systems. The units carry a 25-year design life exceeding the 15-to-20-year industry average and all three sites will connect to Saudi Arabia's 380kV transmission backbone.

Saudi Arabia's rapid emergence as a global BESS market is underscored by the scale of recent deployments. The kingdom led global utility-scale BESS installations in July 2026, with 2.5GW/12.5GWh commissioned that month alone. SPPC has already begun qualifying bidders for a second build-own-operate tender covering 3GW/12GWh of capacity in the same 500MW/2GWh-per-site configuration, indicating that the pace of procurement seen in the first round is set to continue.

Key Highlights:

  • Gotion High-Tech secures approximately 75% of Saudi Arabia's first utility-scale BESS tender, covering three 500MW/2GWh sites across Makkah and Hail provinces, valued at approximately US$1.16 billion.

  • The award marks the first international large-scale deployment of Gotion Grid, engineered for extreme desert conditions with a 25-year design life and a thermal management system reducing high-temperature degradation by 40%.

  • Saudi Arabia led global utility-scale BESS installations in July 2026, with 2.5GW/12.5GWh commissioned in a single month, reflecting the kingdom's accelerating energy storage ambitions under Vision 2030.

  • SPPC has initiated qualification for a second build-own-operate tender covering 3GW/12GWh of additional capacity, signalling a sustained and expanding procurement pipeline.

Analyst Insight:

According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, the outcome of Saudi Arabia's first utility-scale BESS tender reflects a broader structural shift in the global energy storage market, where sovereign procurement programmes in the Middle East are rapidly transitioning from early-stage planning to large-scale, bankable project execution. NMSC analysts note that the global Battery Energy Storage System market, valued at USD 52.73 billion in 2025, is projected to reach USD 127.92 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 19.39%, with utility-scale deployments in high-growth regions such as the Middle East serving as a key catalyst for this expansion. The entry of Chinese manufacturers such as Gotion High-Tech into marquee sovereign tenders further intensifies competitive dynamics and accelerates technology cost reduction across the sector.

Industry Outlook:

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 target of sourcing 50% of electricity from renewables has positioned the kingdom as one of the fastest-growing BESS markets globally. The SPPC's move to qualify bidders for a second 3GW/12GWh tender before the first round's projects have broken ground signals a procurement pipeline that is outpacing conventional project timelines. For the broader BESS industry, the Saudi market's scale, standardised project configurations, and long-term build-own-operate structures are establishing a replicable model that other Middle Eastern and North African nations are likely to emulate. As grid-scale storage becomes central to energy transition strategies worldwide, the convergence of sovereign procurement ambition and advanced battery technology is expected to drive sustained capacity additions through the remainder of the decade.
