Transgrid Group, Australia’s transmission network operator, has announced the commencement of major construction on the HumeLink transmission project in New South Wales.

HumeLink will involve the installation of 365 kilometres of new 500 kV transmission lines connecting Wagga Wagga, Maragle, and Bannaby, along with the erection of 835 transmission towers built from 52,610 tonnes of steel.

The project aims to strengthen the southern electricity grid and enable greater integration of solar and wind power generated in south-west NSW.

Transgrid Group CEO Brett Redman stated that the new transmission line is projected to deliver over $1 billion in net economic benefits and enhance access to renewable energy for consumers across New South Wales.

“HumeLink is a major step forward in delivering the sustainable, affordable and reliable energy all Australians deserve,” said Redman. “Nation-building projects such as HumeLink are crucial to helping the Australian Government achieve its 2035 climate change target of a 62–70% reduction in emissions compared with 2005 levels.”

Transgrid also confirmed that agreements have been finalised with 98.9% of private landholders involved in the HumeLink project, marking a significant milestone in its development.

The HumeLink project is being designed and built in two sections: HumeLink East, delivered by the ACCIONA and GenusPlus Group Joint Venture, and HumeLink West, undertaken by the UGL and CPB Contractors Joint Venture.

The project is expected to create around 1,600 construction jobs and contribute approximately $6.3 billion in direct and indirect investment to regional economies.

To support the workforce, temporary accommodation camps will be established at Adjungbilly, Kunama, Tarcutta, and Yass, providing facilities for up to 1,200 workers during the construction phase.
