Indonesia is set to begin testing hydrogen-powered vehicles on Jakarta’s roads in July 2026, marking a decisive move toward establishing a national hydrogen ecosystem and accelerating its clean energy transition. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, will feature buses, cars, and converted motorcycles operating along one of the capital’s main corridors. The trials are scheduled for July 23, 2026, along the Sudirman–Thamrin corridor as part of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2026. Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot revealed the plan during the virtual opening of a pre-summit event on Tuesday.
According to Yuliot, the government views hydrogen development through a comprehensive ecosystem approach. “The government has a strong interest in this summit because we view hydrogen development from a full-ecosystem perspective,” he stated. The summit will encompass conferences, business matching sessions, hydrogen road trials, and vehicle test drives. These activities are designed to strengthen stakeholder confidence and encourage broader participation in Indonesia’s emerging hydrogen industry. Currently, hydrogen utilization in Indonesia is concentrated in fertilizer production and oil refining. The upcoming vehicle trials reflect the government’s intent to extend hydrogen applications into the transportation sector, thereby broadening its industrial footprint.
Hydrogen and ammonia have been formally recognized as strategic new energy sources under Government Regulation No. 40 of 2025. Under this framework, Indonesia aims for hydrogen and ammonia to contribute between 10 and 12 percent of the national primary energy mix by 2060. At present, national hydrogen consumption stands at approximately 1.75 million tons annually, primarily serving fertilizer and refining industries. This concentration underscores the importance of diversifying hydrogen’s applications as part of a broader clean energy strategy. GHES 2026 is structured to foster cross-sector collaboration in advancing hydrogen and ammonia development. The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s wider energy transition agenda and its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier.
The Jakarta road trials represent more than a technical exercise; they serve as a public demonstration of hydrogen’s potential role in transportation. By integrating real-world vehicle operations into the summit agenda, the government aims to showcase readiness while encouraging investment and policy alignment across sectors. Through coordinated events, industry engagement, and regulatory support, Indonesia is positioning hydrogen as a central pillar of its long-term energy transformation.
According to the Next Move Strategy Consulting’s view, the Indonesia’s Hydrogen Market vehicle trials signal a structured and policy-backed approach to clean energy diversification. By combining regulatory recognition, measurable energy mix targets, and ecosystem-driven collaboration through GHES 2026, the country is laying foundational steps toward expanding hydrogen beyond traditional industrial uses. The move to demonstrate hydrogen-powered transportation in a high-visibility urban setting reflects a strategic effort to build market confidence, stimulate cross-sector partnerships, and accelerate progress toward Indonesia’s 2060 net-zero emissions objective.
