Google has issued a serious warning to its 1.8 billion Gmail users worldwide about a new wave of cyberattacks driven by artificial intelligence. The threat, known as indirect prompt injections, represents a significant shift in how hackers exploit AI-powered systems, embedding hidden malicious commands inside emails and documents.
Unlike traditional cyberattacks where harmful commands are directly inserted, these new attacks disguise instructions within everyday content like emails, calendar invites, or documents. When processed by AI systems, these commands can trigger harmful actions such as leaking user data or enabling unauthorized access.
In a detailed blog post, Google highlighted the broader implications:
“With the rapid adoption of generative AI, a new wave of threats is emerging across the industry with the aim of manipulating the AI systems themselves. One such emerging attack vector is indirect prompt injections.”
Google warned that this method poses risks not only for individuals but also for businesses and governments that increasingly rely on generative AI to handle sensitive operations.
Tech expert Scott Polderman explained that cybercriminals are now using Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, to extract confidential data. According to his analysis, hackers craft emails with hidden commands that cause Gemini to reveal user passwords — without any direct action from the user.
“This scam is different because it’s AI against AI,” said Polderman, noting that the attack doesn’t require users to click a malicious link. Instead, Gemini itself can display a manipulated warning that convinces users they are at risk.
He emphasized a crucial reminder:
“Google has said it will never ask for login details or alert users about fraud through Gemini.”
As more governments, enterprises, and individuals adopt generative AI for productivity and personal use, the risk of such subtle yet potent attacks grows. Google’s warning stresses the importance of building robust defenses to prevent AI systems from being tricked into compromising their own users.
Google’s red alert highlights a turning point in cybersecurity: the battlefield is no longer just humans against hackers but AI systems against manipulated AI instructions. This evolution demands stronger safeguards, heightened awareness, and rapid industry response.
