Most influenza-like illness cases were attributed to the A/H1N1 and A/H3N2 strains, with minimal influenza B activity during the study period.
Antibody responses for influenza A were similar across both vaccines. However, the modRNA vaccine did not meet noninferiority thresholds for influenza B strains, a finding that researchers noted will require further evaluation.
Safety observations found higher rates of local and systemic reactions among modRNA recipients. Injection-site reactions occurred in 70.1% of the modRNA group compared with 43.1% in the standard vaccine group. Systemic symptoms were reported in 65.8% of modRNA recipients versus 48.7% in the comparator group, with fever occurring in 5.6% and 1.7% respectively. Despite higher reactogenicity, overall safety profiles remained comparable, with only rare serious adverse events.
The study authors emphasized the importance of additional research in older adults, children, and individuals with chronic conditions, as these groups represent the populations most vulnerable to severe influenza complications.
Researchers noted that these outcomes represent a significant step forward in modernizing influenza vaccination. The ability to tailor vaccines more precisely to circulating strains could help create more consistent protection across flu seasons, particularly as the virus continues to evolve unpredictably.
