The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is nearing completion of its coal and liquid fertilizer plants in Kano, Kano State, marking a significant step toward enhancing Nigeria’s food security. A statement from NASENI’s Director of Information, New Media and Protocols, Ousegun Ayeoyenikan, confirmed that the pioneering coal fertilizer project is being executed in partnership with Whitefog Environmental Services Limited and under a bilateral technology transfer agreement with PT Saputra Global Harvest of Indonesia.
NASENI’s collaboration with Whitefog also extends to liquid fertilizer production, aiming to improve soil quality and agricultural output in line with President Bola Tinubu’s 8-point Agenda on food security. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
“Nigeria’s soil quality has long challenged farmers, with conventional NPK fertilizers often insufficient to meet crop nutrient needs,” the statement explained. “Coal fertilizer, with 26 additional mineral concentrates and activation technology, offers an eco-friendly solution to enhance soil fertility and optimize crop yields.”
Engr. Dr. Agava Abdullahi Abdulrasheed, Acting Coordinating Director of NASENI’s Engineering Infrastructure Directorate and Coordinator of the NASENI-Whitefog project, highlighted the scale of the project after inspecting the large production factory, warehouses, laboratories, and administrative buildings. He noted that the initiative will significantly boost agricultural productivity and harvest quality for farmers. Whitefog’s Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Inuwa Babura, added, “The coal fertilizer site along Wudil Road is advanced, with machinery arriving soon to be installed. Production is expected to commence by May or June 2026.”
The NASENI liquid fertilizer project is poised to create approximately 2,000 direct jobs and over 20 million indirect jobs across the agricultural value chain. Analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting note that the launch of domestic liquid fertilizer production represents a pivotal opportunity for Nigeria’s agritech and fertilizer sectors. It is expected to reduce dependence on imported fertilizers, improve supply chain efficiency, and drive growth across the broader agricultural market. By merging innovation, technology transfer, and strategic partnerships, NASENI’s fertilizer initiatives underscore Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, food security, and economic growth.
The development of liquid fertilizer production in Kano represents a transformative moment for Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Domestic production reduces reliance on imported fertilizers, improves supply chain resilience, and ensures consistent access to nutrient-rich inputs for farmers. From a market perspective, liquid fertilizers offer higher nutrient efficiency and faster absorption compared to conventional NPK fertilizers, addressing long-standing soil fertility challenges. The integration of advanced production technologies, as demonstrated by NASENI and Whitefog, positions Nigeria to capture a growing share of the domestic agritech and fertilizer market while supporting sustainable farming practices.
Economically, the project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities approximately 2,000 direct jobs and over 20 million indirect jobs stimulating growth across the agricultural value chain. Analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting highlight that these initiatives align with broader national and global sustainability goals, making liquid fertilizers a key lever for improving food security, crop yields, and economic development.
