As the global food system faces mounting pressure from climate change, resource constraints, and rising food demand, Nestlé and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) have introduced a major initiative aimed at strengthening knowledge and skills across the sustainable agriculture and food sector. The launch of the World Food Academy for Sustainable Food Systems marks a significant step toward building a more resilient and inclusive global food ecosystem.

The newly established academy is designed to enhance education, career development, and knowledge exchange within the food and agriculture sector. It specifically targets university students, early-career researchers, and young professionals engaged in food production, nutrition, and sustainability—particularly in priority regions across the Global South.

Professor Kaveh Madani, Director of UNU-INWEH, emphasized that the initiative serves as a platform to convert interdisciplinary research into practical solutions. By equipping emerging professionals with scientific, technical, and policy-related expertise, the academy aims to address complex challenges surrounding food security, nutrition, and sustainability.

The collaboration also reinforces efforts to bridge the gap between research and policy, ensuring that scientific knowledge is effectively translated into real-world applications that support long-term food system resilience.

Science and Technology Training at the Core

A central pillar of the academy is the integration of Nestlé’s Science & Technology Seminars, originally launched under the Nestlé needs YOUth programme in 2023. These seminars focus on key areas such as agricultural science, food science, nutrition, and sustainable food production techniques.

The programme has already demonstrated global reach, engaging approximately 7,000 students across more than 300 academic institutions in over 90 countries. Through this partnership, UNU-INWEH will enhance the programme by contributing expertise in research, policy engagement, and capacity building.

In addition, the academy will emphasize sustainable agriculture practices and responsible land management—critical components linked to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and long-term food security. Importantly, all educational resources developed through this initiative will remain freely accessible, ensuring inclusive learning opportunities worldwide, especially in low-income regions.

Nestlé’s Chief Technology Officer, Professor Stefan Palzer, highlighted the importance of collaboration across the food value chain, noting that shared expertise in science, technology, and nutrition can help transform both global and local food systems into more sustainable and accessible models.

Expanding Global Collaboration and Opportunities

The World Food Academy builds upon UNU-INWEH’s existing digital education platforms, including its Online Learning Centre and Media Academy, further expanding its global educational footprint developed over three decades.

Looking ahead, the initiative aims to establish a broad network of universities, research institutions, and industry partners. It is expected to offer a range of opportunities, including internships, fellowships, sabbaticals, and specialized training programmes to strengthen workforce capabilities in sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Additionally, Nestlé and UNU-INWEH plan to host a Sustainable Food Systems symposium later this year, bringing together policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to explore practical solutions for improving access to nutritious and affordable food.
