As Russia escalates its offensive across Ukraine, the nation’s vast 21,000 km railway network has emerged as a new front line — both strategically and symbolically. Once a lifeline for transport and logistics, Ukraine’s railways now stand at the center of what officials describe as a “battle for the railways,” as Moscow’s forces increase drone and missile strikes on critical train and power infrastructure.
The attacks have grown more frequent and more targeted. According to Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ), Ukraine’s national rail operator, September saw twice as many strikes as August — not only on trains, but also on supporting infrastructure. Officials report that half of all railway attacks since the war began have occurred in just the past two months.
In one recent strike in the northern Sumy region, a Russian “Shahed” drone hit a train at Shostka station. As rescue teams worked to reach the injured, a second drone struck — a “double tap” attack. Thirty people were injured, including three children, and one man died, reportedly from a heart attack.
Deputy Minister Oleksiy Balesta confirmed that Russia has been “hunting for locomotives — deliberately targeting both freight and passenger trains.” Behind him in Kyiv stands a wrecked intercity locomotive, evidence of one such strike that also hit a key junction in Koziatyn, disrupting services nationwide.
Ukraine’s officials point to two main reasons behind the surge: Russia’s expanding production of low-cost Shahed drones and the near-stalemate on the front lines, which has shifted Moscow’s focus toward crippling supply chains.
“The enemy is trying to stop us completely,” says Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chief Executive of Ukrzaliznytsia. “This is part of a war tactic meant to cause panic among civilians, destroy our economy, and make the country unliveable.”
Despite mounting pressure, Ukraine’s rail system remains operational through meticulous coordination and contingency planning. “We always have Plan B, C, and D,” Pertsovskyi explains. “The goal is never to cancel a single service or destination.”
Railway staff are trained to identify sabotage threats and coordinate closely with the military to repair damage quickly. Beyond logistics, morale remains a central focus. When one passenger shared on social media that a rerouted journey would force her to spend her birthday on a train, the crew sent her cake and flowers — a gesture reflecting the railway’s human spirit amid crisis.
The Ukrainian rail system — the only reliable means of moving people, goods, and international dignitaries — has earned a symbolic title: “iron diplomacy.” Those who risk their lives to keep it running are celebrated as “iron heroes.” Recently, a group of railway workers who fought fires during a depot strike were honored in Kyiv with bravery certificates and extra pay.
As Russia continues to target Ukraine’s power grid alongside its rail infrastructure, hundreds of thousands have been left without electricity. UZ’s leadership warns that this winter could be the hardest yet, urging allies for stronger air defenses. Still, as Pertsovskyi asserts, “We’re not desperate. Ukrainians remain strong in spirit.”
The intensification of attacks on Ukraine’s railway network represents a strategic pivot in hybrid warfare — targeting logistics, morale, and economic stability simultaneously. This trend underscores the growing vulnerability of transport infrastructure in modern conflicts, suggesting future defense investments will prioritize mobility resilience, decentralized logistics, and rapid-repair systems to safeguard essential operations.
