ZURICH, Switzerland — June 25, 2026 — Switzerland has begun contract negotiations with manufacturers from France, Israel and South Korea to procure a second air defence system, after delays to its existing order of U.S.-made Patriot missile systems, the Swiss government said on Wednesday. The move underscores a broader push among neutral European states to diversify defense supply chains and reduce dependence on a single provider amid a deteriorating regional security environment.
Switzerland in 2022 ordered Patriot missile defence systems made by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin for expected delivery between 2026 and 2028, but the timeline was pushed back four to five years due to the war in Ukraine. The Swiss defence ministry said it had restarted previously paused payments to the United States over the Patriot system, with delivery now possible from 2027.
National armaments director Urs Loher told a press conference that the second system would not be Israel's Arrow defence system. Swiss defence minister Martin Pfister said the second order would likely be significantly more expensive than the initial Patriot price tag of around 2 billion francs ($2.5 billion).
The ministry stated that the decision reflected a "deteriorating security situation," requiring the neutral country to strengthen its defensive capacity quickly and to add capability beyond the Patriot system. When Switzerland signalled last month that it was weighing acquisitions beyond Patriot, Germany had also been named as a potential supplier.

According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, heightened geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts worldwide are compelling countries to invest in resilient air defence capabilities, further boosting market expansion. NMSC analysts note that the global Air Defense System Market is projected to reach USD 62.23 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 5.2% from 2024 to 2030.
Switzerland's pursuit of a second supplier reflects a wider trend in which procurement decisions increasingly prioritise security of supply and reduced reliance on any single provider. As European demand for layered air defence rises, multi-vendor sourcing strategies are likely to remain a defining feature of national defence planning over the coming decade.
