Honey Production โ Honey production refers to the annual quantity of natural honey harvested from managed honeybee colonies through beekeeping activities. It represents the total output of honey collected by beekeepers during a specific period and is used as a macro indicator to assess the scale, productivity, and performance of the apiculture sector. The indicator measures honey production volumes across countries and regions, helping analyze long-term production trends, agricultural contributions, and developments within the global honey industry.
The downward trend continued in 2017, with production decreasing further to 6.31 thousand tonnes, indicating challenges faced by the domestic apiculture sector during this period. However, production showed signs of recovery in 2018, reaching 10.30 thousand tonnes, supported by improved beekeeping conditions and favorable honey harvesting cycles.
Between 2019 and 2024, Taiwanโs honey production continued to demonstrate an uneven but gradually recovering trend. Production declined sharply to 2.91 thousand tonnes in 2019, representing the lowest output during the observed period. However, the sector gradually regained momentum, with production increasing to 8.39 thousand tonnes in 2020 and further rising to 13.26 thousand tonnes in 2021, marking the highest production level recorded during the decade. In the following years, production fluctuated but remained relatively stable, reaching approximately 9.33 thousand tonnes in 2022, 11.20 thousand tonnes in 2023, and 11.22 thousand tonnes in 2024.
Taiwanโs honey industry is supported by diverse flowering plants, seasonal honey production cycles, and a combination of commercial and small-scale beekeeping activities. The country produces various types of honey from different floral sources, contributing to domestic consumption and specialty honey markets. However, limited agricultural land, weather variability, and environmental challenges can significantly impact annual production levels.
From a macro indicator perspective, Taiwanโs honey production reflects a sector characterized by periodic fluctuations rather than consistent linear growth. Despite production volatility, the recovery observed after 2019 highlights the resilience of the apiculture industry and the ability of beekeepers to adapt to changing conditions. Future growth opportunities will depend on sustainable bee management, protection of pollinator resources, technological improvements, and strategies to enhance production stability.
