International Graphite Advances European Hub Strategy

Industry Insights from Next Move Strategy Consulting

As demand rises for battery-grade graphite and advanced industrial carbon materials, International Graphite Ltd has reached a significant milestone in its European expansion strategy. The company’s latest purification test work with partner Alkeemia has delivered high-purity outcomes that reinforce both the technical strength and commercial potential of its planned graphite processing hub in Italy.

The results mark another step forward in International Graphite’s broader strategy to establish an integrated supply chain spanning mine production through to advanced graphite products for global markets.

Advancing a Strategic European Processing Platform

International Graphite announced that all seven graphite concentrate samples tested surpassed its target purity level of 99.9% total graphitic carbon (TGC), with several samples reaching up to 99.98% purity. These outcomes further validate the hydrofluoric acid-based purification process selected for the proposed joint venture facility in Porto Marghera, Venice.

The planned facility is being developed through a proposed 51:49 joint venture between International Graphite and Alkeemia. First outlined in late March, the initiative is central to the company’s long-term objective of building a globally relevant and vertically integrated graphite business.

Key Highlights at a Glance:

  • All seven tested graphite concentrate samples exceeded 99.9% TGC purity targets.

  • Several samples achieved ultra-high purity levels of up to 99.98% TGC.

  • Test work covered feedstock from Western Australia, Africa, and Europe.

  • Strong consistency was demonstrated across multiple flake sizes and material sources.

  • The process supports treatment of third-party feedstock alongside company-owned supply. Planned purification capacity targets 200 tonnes per year initially, scaling to 20,000 tonnes annually by 2030.

Demonstrating Feedstock Flexibility and Supply Resilience

The latest test program included graphite concentrates sourced from the company’s Springdale project in Western Australia, together with material from African and European suppliers. Purification results ranged from approximately 99.91% to 99.98% TGC depending on feedstock origin and sample type.

This ability to achieve premium purity levels across varied inputs is considered an important technical milestone. It highlights the flexibility of the proposed processing hub to work with multiple feedstock streams, supporting supply diversification while reducing upstream concentration risk.

Management also emphasized that the facility could process third-party materials in addition to its own production, broadening commercial opportunities and strengthening operational resilience.

Building a Scalable Commercial Operation

The new results directly support development planning for the Porto Marghera hub. Alkeemia is targeting an initial industrial purification capacity of around 200 tonnes per year, with expansion plans to reach 20,000 tonnes annually by 2030.

International Graphite has been allocated up to 50% of the start-up capacity and is seeking to increase its share as throughput grows. In parallel, both companies are progressing engineering design, site layouts, cost estimates, and negotiations for key commercial agreements. Discussions are also underway with multiple graphite concentrate producers, while advanced talks continue with a European sales partner.

Next Move Strategy Consulting’s View

According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the Graphite Market is entering a new phase where downstream processing capability, purity consistency, and regional supply chain security will shape future competitiveness. Producers that can move beyond raw material extraction into high-value refining and specialty products are expected to capture stronger long-term opportunities.

The firm notes that Europe is becoming an increasingly important market for battery anodes, expandable graphite, and industrial carbon applications. As a result, projects that combine scalable purification capacity with flexible multi-source feedstock strategies are likely to attract growing industry attention.

Strengthening Position in a High-Growth Market

International Graphite’s latest purification achievements add momentum to its transition toward downstream processing and value-added production. By translating laboratory success into a scalable European platform, the company is positioning itself to serve one of the world’s most important end markets for advanced graphite materials.

With these results, International Graphite moves closer to establishing a commercially viable processing hub capable of delivering ultra-high-purity graphite at scale, while reinforcing the strategic importance of integrated supply chains in the evolving global graphite sector.
