Sunflower Oil Production — Sunflower oil production refers to the total quantity of edible oil extracted from sunflower seeds through various processing methods such as mechanical pressing, solvent extraction, and refining. It represents the annual output of sunflower-derived oil produced within a country or region and reflects the scale of sunflower cultivation, seed availability, processing capacity, and demand for sunflower-based edible oils. Sunflower oil production is an important agricultural and industrial indicator used to assess trends in oilseed farming, food supply chains, vegetable oil markets, and the overall performance of the sunflower oil industry.
Production dropped to 218,946 tonnes in 2019, mainly due to lower sunflower seed output and changing planting patterns. The region rebounded strongly in 2020, with production increasing to 260,537 tonnes, before easing to 229,537 tonnes in 2021. Production reached its highest level of the period at 293,725.4 tonnes in 2022, driven by improved harvests, favorable growing conditions, and increased oil extraction activity. However, output declined to 224,509.64 tonnes in 2023, indicating weaker harvest volumes and adjustments in agricultural production.
The United States remained the largest sunflower oil producer in North America throughout the period, accounting for the majority of regional output. U.S. production declined from 221,000 tonnes in 2015 to 179,000 tonnes in 2023, despite peaking at 252,000 tonnes in 2022. Canada strengthened its contribution over the review period, increasing production from 21,100 tonnes in 2015 to 32,600 tonnes in 2023, with consistently rising processing capacity and sunflower cultivation. Mexico maintained relatively stable production, fluctuating between 9,300 tonnes and 13,100 tonnes, reaching 12,900 tonnes in 2023. Output from the remaining North American countries was minimal, contributing only 146 tonnes in 2019, 37 tonnes in 2020, 137 tonnes in 2021, 25.4 tonnes in 2022, and 9.64 tonnes in 2023.
Overall, North America's sunflower oil industry is supported by modern farming techniques, efficient oil extraction facilities, and established food processing industries. Future production trends will largely depend on climatic conditions, sunflower acreage, technological advancements, and growing consumer demand for healthier vegetable oils.
