Walnut Production โ Walnut production refers to the total quantity of walnuts harvested and produced from walnut trees within a country or region during a specific year. It measures the agricultural output of walnuts, including commercially cultivated walnut orchards and other agricultural production systems. The indicator represents harvested walnut quantities and is generally measured in tonnes, reflecting the scale, productivity, and growth trends of the walnut industry across different regions.
Between 2015 and 2024, walnut production showed moderate fluctuations, decreasing from approximately 5.79 thousand tonnes in 2015 to around 5.52 thousand tonnes in 2024. Production variations during the period were influenced by seasonal weather conditions, orchard productivity, climatic changes, harvesting cycles, and variations in agricultural management practices. The walnut industry in North Macedonia primarily consists of small and medium-scale farms that cultivate walnut trees for edible nut production intended for domestic consumption and limited commercial purposes. The sector benefits from suitable growing conditions, including favourable temperatures and agricultural land availability, which support walnut tree development and long-term orchard sustainability. Improvements in cultivation methods, better orchard maintenance, and adoption of modern agricultural technologies can contribute to enhancing productivity and stabilizing future output. However, challenges such as climate variability, limited large-scale investment, aging plantations, and competition from established walnut-producing countries influence the overall growth potential of the sector. Walnut production contributes to agricultural diversification and supports rural economic activities by creating opportunities across cultivation, harvesting, and distribution processes. This macro indicator measures the annual quantity of walnuts harvested from cultivated walnut trees in North Macedonia, reflecting changes in production efficiency, farming practices, and industry development. It includes only primary walnut production from agricultural activities and excludes processed walnut products such as walnut oil, roasted walnuts, and packaged food items. The indicator also excludes imports, exports, consumption volumes, market value, and non-food uses of walnut trees, focusing specifically on harvested walnut output.
