Honey Production — Honey production refers to the annual quantity of natural honey harvested from managed honeybee colonies through beekeeping activities. It represents the total output of honey collected by beekeepers during a specific period and is used as a macro indicator to assess the scale, productivity, and performance of the apiculture sector. The indicator measures honey production volumes across countries and regions, helping analyze long-term production trends, agricultural contributions, and developments within the global honey industry.
Output rose to 16.53 thousand tonnes in 2016 and continued expanding to 18.76 thousand tonnes in 2017, demonstrating the strengthening capacity of Vietnam’s honey-producing sector. The upward trend continued in 2018 and 2019, with production reaching 20.41 thousand tonnes and 21.85 thousand tonnes, respectively, supported by improved beekeeping practices and growing market demand.
During the period from 2020 to 2024, Vietnam’s honey production maintained its positive growth momentum despite minor fluctuations. Production reached approximately 21.50 thousand tonnes in 2020 and increased gradually to 21.69 thousand tonnes in 2021. The sector experienced further expansion in subsequent years, with output rising to 23.77 thousand tonnes in 2022, 24.57 thousand tonnes in 2023, and approximately 25.46 thousand tonnes in 2024. This represents a significant increase compared with 2015, highlighting the long-term development and improving productivity of Vietnam’s apiculture industry.
Vietnam’s honey industry benefits from abundant floral resources, diverse agricultural landscapes, and suitable environmental conditions for honeybee cultivation. The country has developed a strong beekeeping network that includes commercial producers and small-scale farmers, contributing to rural employment and agricultural sustainability. Honey production also supports crop productivity through pollination services, making apiculture an important part of the agricultural ecosystem.
From a macro indicator perspective, Vietnam’s honey production demonstrates a steadily expanding industry with considerable growth potential. The increase from 15.48 thousand tonnes in 2015 to 25.46 thousand tonnes in 2024 reflects improved production capacity, enhanced hive management practices, and increasing integration into domestic and international honey markets. Future growth opportunities will depend on sustainable beekeeping methods, quality improvement, disease management, and continued investment in modern apiculture technologies.
