Data definition
Sugarcane Production per Capita — Sugarcane Production per Capita refers to the annual quantity of sugarcane produced relative to the total population of a country, region, or the world. The indicator is calculated by dividing total annual sugarcane production by the corresponding population and is expressed in kilograms or grams per person, depending on the scale of the reported data. It provides a population-adjusted measure of sugarcane agricultural output and supports comparisons of production trends across geographical areas and over time.
The data includes annual sugarcane production generated through agricultural cultivation and harvesting within the selected country, region, or global area. It covers the total quantity of sugarcane produced during each reported year and adjusts production values using the corresponding population. The indicator includes annual changes associated with variations in harvested area, crop yields, weather conditions, agricultural practices, production capacity, and other factors affecting sugarcane output. The data is presented as an annual time series for the selected years and geographical areas available in the source dataset.
The data excludes actual sugarcane consumption, individual dietary intake, and the quantity of sugarcane available for domestic use. It does not directly measure sugarcane imports, exports, trade flows, inventories, or changes in stocks. The indicator also excludes post-harvest losses, processing and distribution losses, and the production of processed sugarcane products, including refined sugar, molasses, ethanol, and other derived products. Differences in the reported values may arise from changes in production estimates, population data, data collection methods, reporting practices, geographical coverage, or revisions to the underlying dataset.

Production declined gradually from 323.81 kilograms in 2015 to 303.66 kilograms in 2018, followed by a temporary increase to 310.72 kilograms in 2019. The regional figure then continued to decline, reaching 295.38 kilograms in 2020, 280.58 kilograms in 2021, 278.33 kilograms in 2022, and 263.96 kilograms in 2023, before falling further in 2024.
Among the selected countries, Belize recorded the highest sugarcane production per capita throughout the period. Production increased from 3,328.70 kilograms per capita in 2015 to a peak of 4,789.78 kilograms in 2021, before fluctuating and reaching 4,002.69 kilograms in 2024. Belize’s consistently high values reflect the significant role of sugarcane cultivation in its agricultural sector.
Guatemala recorded the second-highest production levels but experienced a substantial long-term decline. Its production decreased from 2,120.57 kilograms per capita in 2015 to 1,244.56 kilograms in 2024, despite temporary increases during some years. Costa Rica also showed an overall downward trend, falling from 901.62 kilograms per capita in 2015 to 806.89 kilograms in 2024, although production recovered from 670.40 kilograms in 2023.
Mexico maintained comparatively stable production during the first half of the period, ranging between approximately 456 and 472 kilograms per capita, before declining to 405.40 kilograms in 2024. In contrast, the United States recorded much lower production levels, fluctuating between 85.77 and 96.48 kilograms per capita, and ending at 91.51 kilograms in 2024.
Overall, North America’s sugarcane production per capita declined between 2015 and 2024. While Belize remained the region’s strongest producer on a per-person basis, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the regional average showed varying degrees of long-term reduction.
