Data definition
Sugarcane Production per Capita — Sugarcane Production per Capita refers to the annual quantity of sugarcane produced relative to the total population of a country, region, or the world. The indicator is calculated by dividing total sugarcane production by the corresponding population and is reported in kilograms or grams per person, depending on the scale used in the dataset. It provides a population-adjusted measure of agricultural production and allows sugarcane output to be compared across different geographical areas and time periods.
The data includes annual sugarcane production from agricultural cultivation within the selected country, region, or global area. It covers the total quantity of sugarcane produced during each reported year and adjusts this production according to the corresponding population. The indicator includes changes in production resulting from variations in harvested area, crop yields, climatic conditions, agricultural practices, technological developments, and production capacity. The data is presented as an annual time series for the selected period and geographical coverage available in the source dataset.
The data excludes actual sugarcane consumption, individual dietary intake, and the quantity of sugarcane available for domestic use. It does not directly include sugarcane imports, exports, inventories, stock changes, or trade flows. The indicator also excludes post-harvest losses, processing losses, distribution losses, and the production of processed products such as refined sugar, molasses, ethanol, or other sugarcane-derived products. Differences in production estimates may occur because of changes in data collection methods, reporting practices, revisions, geographical coverage, or population estimates.

It provides a population-adjusted measure of agricultural output and helps evaluate changes in sugarcane production over time while accounting for population growth.
Global sugarcane production per capita showed moderate fluctuations between 2015 and 2024. The indicator stood at 250.83 kilograms per person in 2015 and declined slightly to 248.95 kilograms in 2016. It decreased further to 240.38 kilograms in 2017 before recovering to 250.20 kilograms in 2018. Global production per capita remained relatively stable at 251.19 kilograms in 2019, representing the highest value recorded during the period. However, the indicator declined to 238.64 kilograms in 2020 and fell further to 234.64 kilograms in 2021, the lowest level during the ten-year period.
The global figure recovered moderately to 239.51 kilograms per person in 2022 and increased to 249.31 kilograms in 2023. Despite this improvement, sugarcane production per capita declined again to 237.66 kilograms in 2024. Overall, the indicator decreased by approximately 5.25% between 2015 and 2024, indicating that global sugarcane production did not grow at the same pace as the world population over the period.
Sugarcane production per capita is useful for assessing worldwide agricultural performance and comparing production trends across different periods. However, it does not represent actual sugarcane consumption or the quantity available to each individual. The indicator may be influenced by changes in harvested area, crop yields, weather conditions, agricultural technology, population growth, government policies, processing demand, international trade, and market conditions. Overall, global sugarcane production per capita remained relatively stable but showed a gradual downward trend between 2015 and 2024.
